Cycling & Herefordshire Council
Cycle Hereford tries to maintain a ‘critical friend’ relationship with Herefordshire Council. We respond to consultations and comment on scheme designs. See our Campaigns & Issues page for current, recent and ongoing efforts.
We try to to resist the tendency of engineers and politicians either to lump pedestrians and cyclists together (depriving both road user groups of the space they need) or to restrict cyclists to narrow, uncomfortable and fragmentary margins of the road network.
We emphasise the right of cyclists to use the road network in Hereford, and the duty of those who manage it to ensure that it is cycle friendly. We prefer slow progress in the right direction to reversals and dead-ends.
In June 2007 we gave a joint presentation to the County’s now disbanded ‘Pedestrian Access and Cycle Forum’ setting out our approach. You can view this presentation by clicking here.
Herefordshire Council has a programme of cycle infrastructure schemes, many identified in a 1998 strategy for cycling in Hereford. It promotes cycling through information and training for children and adults. It has several web pages which give a very clear picture of plans and prospects for cycling in the county.
